The renovation of a farmhouse in Whitehall, MD, provided the clients with the open and minimal living environment they had dreamed of.
The scope of the project included an exterior living space for the family and a formal planting scheme that would draw the lines of the house out into the surrounding landscape. The design took the form of a series of outdoor rooms with specific programs: the larger terrace directly off the kitchen intended for dining and the more intimate terrace to the side for year-round entertaining.
The minimal plant palette provides structure to the garden and reinforces the strong lines of the hardscape. A framework of evergreen shrubs is balanced by native perennials and flowering shrubs, lending the garden interest for twelve months of the year.
